Fantastic resource for social work students
An Introduction to Social Work Practice by Melanie Parris provides a strong and informative introduction to social work. The writing style is concise and unambiguous and provides information which will enable students to develop their knowledge and understanding of social work which will prepare them for practice. The text is well defined, engaging and provides some beneficial information on social work values and learning styles (with the focus being placed on active learning). Furthermore, the book provides overviews on other books and resources on social work so that the reader may explore in more depth the areas covered within the book. I particularly like the way the writer has drawn on their own extensive experience and the experiences of others involved in social work practice in order to provide a well-rounded view of social work. The section on reflective practice provides some essential information and examples to aid learning. The element on" the social work knowledge base " is particularly useful as this provides a synopsis on the various elements which underpin social work . The book also provides information on multi-disciplinary work, social policy, ethics and values and covers effective communication skills, information which will enable the student to practice effectively. In my view, this book provides an excellent foundation for social work students and a fantastic introduction to anyone who is considering embarking on a social work career, in particular those on an access to social work course. It is an excellent resource and in my view should be on the essential reading list of every social work student, I really cannot recommend this book enough it definitely is a must have item.

An Introduction to Social Work Practice
The book was very helpful in promoting social change and solving service user problems during my first year practice placement. Interventions were much easier using the models explained by the author. I used the book whilst on my social work student placement. The book inspired me to complete my GSCC National Occupational Standards for Social Work successfully. The book guided me to communicate effectively with service users and to be aware of professional boundaries. I used some of the models and theories listed in the book to understand and to manage complex issues during my placement. The book was diverse, it was suited to all service user groups and it could be used in different settings. I had not realized that I could use supervision to protect my practice performance and to report unsatisfactory measures during practice. The book was very informative and it touched many areas of social work practice. The book improved my practical knowledge and it guided me on how to deal with different issues of practice professionally. Examples given in each topic made it clear to put theory into context . I managed to challenge disadvantage and to chair service meetings using the models explained in the book. Working with multi professionals was purposeful due to the book. The book was more than a practice handbook because I also used it for academic work. The book is more clearer to read and to understand. It is not a heavy book to carry whilst on practice. I carried the book whilst on practice and used it as guidance and reference in critical circumstances during my practice placement. I enjoyed reading the book and I will continue to use it for professionalism. I would recommend the book to anyone studying social work, social care or anyone who works with service users.

book review
The book has very clear signposting to the different features, such as 'pause for thought', exercises, case studies, practice experience and student experience panels. There are strong sections on values, and service user/carer participation. The exercises have been well received by social work students I have used them with as a tutor. The book is innovative, such as promoting 'study groups', and the use of Personal Profiles. It encourates critical and reflective thinking. It also effectively synthesises social work knowledge. The heart of the book is about working with people, and there is a lot of useful material on communication, group work and community work. The references are not just given, but discussed, and the reader is guided on how to use the texts. The focus on professionalism in the final section of the book is very thorough and grounded in practice experience.
