It's 75 degrees and sunny in St. Petersburg, FL but within the pleasant confines of producer Erik Rutan's increasingly popular Mana Studios come the sounds of the apocalypse; tones of the rhythmically sinister and fist-clenchingly metal variety. It is the audible battery of Goatwhore's Metal Blade debut A Haunting Curse. More molten than its gloomier predecessor, the disc stays true to the band's original irreverent Bathory-meets-Baal (the god of thunder) in a bullpen sensibility with punkish resolve and those inimitable Louisiana grooves for which the band has become known. Songs like ber oldschool "Bloodletting Upon The Cloven Hoof," the opening "Wear These Scars Of Testimony" and "Silence Marked By The Breaking Of Bone" are fast, dark and antagonistic, Falgoust's commanding voice and challenging lyrics adding knee-buckling severity to their collective instrumental agility. Rhythms collide with stop-on-a-dime accuracy and Duet's vexing riffs give things a torrential horns-to-the-sky exigency. A Haunting Curse is here to devour. You have been warned.

An ultra brutal metal blend of everything
In a metal world where classification is king, bands are relegated to certain genres and viciously attacked and/or deserted if they stray too far from the accepted path. Louisiana is more known for its doom sound, particularly Down, Crowbar and several other similar outfits that take the oppressive humidity and swamplands and recreate metal that sludges along and sucks you in worse than the muck that lies under the water in the bayous. Goatwhore are the exception. While they have the requisite heavy element, they are much more a mixed bag, and incorporate more metal stylings than many bands of their ilk. This album, the band's third, falls to these ears primarily between extreme thrash on the order of Exodus, who are borderline death metal in their attack, and black metal, Immortal coming to mind. This means of course they can play, as opposed to just making a loud racket. It isn't easy for a band with this much ferocity to display chops, but those bands that can take no prisoners. I don't hear a lot of difference between this and their most recent CD, "Blood For The Master", which is good because Goatwhore know their strengths. For metal fans who love their metal ultra brutal but demand some great lead work and the occasional nod to (slightly) more melodic areas, such as the thrash attack in places, Goatwhore's "A Haunting Curse" is a dandy.

Feel it
If you're even considering this album, stop! Just buy it. I hesitated just a little before buying it, and I found that I loved this band more than I thought (my wife is now pissed-she doesn't really listen to anything heavier than Disturbed)! I love listening to this album, and I will be buying the other albums!

I can't believe how hard this album is.
This album is so hard it's unbeleivable. The drummer never ever quits and it's mainly the drums that makes this album great. Sometimes you don't think the guitars can keep up, but they do. There are some decent guitar riffs here and there, but they don't take center stage that often. The vocals aren't as varied as previous Goatwhore albums, where they would switch from hiss to growl to doom to some kind of scratchy demon voice. Here it pretty much sticks to growl, but every once and a while the hiss will be thrown in. The best song on the album has to be Forever Consumed by Oblivion, but I'm sure you'll find your favorite. Remember, this album is extremely hard and very fast metal.

good extreme music
competent extreme metal band, with nothing new in the style, but good players, good singer, good songs and whatever more you should expect from a simple and honest death-grindcore-metal group, it is worth having and listening for fans of brutal music and metal maniacs, metalheads will like exactly for the lack of "originality", this is raw material for headbangers, fanatics or not, though you must like a sound pretty heavy, from slayer onwards. this guys have fun and love what they do, of course. they are not black metal radicals for sure, which is good also, their sound never gets tiring or boring. only 3 or 4 very good songs, but the album as a whole is a good acquisition.

WHOAAAA!!!! x(
Als Anspieltips empfehle ich "Alchemy of the Black Sun Cult" und "In the Narrow Confines of Defilement".
