Interesting Twist to the Series
This fourth book in this series starts with something of a bang, with the total destruction of one of the Human colonies that have been established. While this is happening, there's a sudden attack on one of the most powerful and ancient races in the Galaxy together with indications that there is a new Power sniffing around the stars near Earth.....Into this situation steps our hero Morgan Casimir, the daughter of the woman who founded the Duchy of Terra. This is a good story, a bit hop-scotch but it works as it jumps back and forth between the three main storyline branches. I enjoyed it, found the character of Morgan interesting and the technological improvements since the last installment (it's 15 years after the third book). I enjoyed it immensely. If you've read the first three books you know the style and understand the characters, so at this point you either like them or don't. If you do, you'll like this book too...if not, it's not for you. Recommended.

Review for books 2,3,4,5
Right off the bat I have to say that this is less of a review on one book and more of a review on four books (being books 2,3,4,5) First off I should say that I love the story's, the character's and all around settings for the Duchy of Terra series BUT (we all knew there had to be one) my issue is with the final battles in books 2,3,4,5 (no spoilers) book 1 had an interesting final battle that left you on the seat of your pant's to find out what Annette Bond was going to do and book 2 also was pretty cool as well, my issue comes into how Glynn replayed the battle from book 2 over and over and over again in that the duchy of terra has a large contingent of opponents who outnumber the total number of terras navy so the navy is ready to hold out as long as possible till SOMEONE (changes per book) comes just in time and all the navy needs to do is make the enemy blink and waste more time till the cavalry rides in to help save the day......... there is no issue with this setup in book 2 as a final battle but when it is the final battle for books 3,4, and 5 you start getting a wee bit annoyed with the repetition and by book 5 I am more than ready for a completely different ending for one of the books even something as simple as "the navy and the enemy where evenly matched but the different weapons on both sides would make all the difference as to who won"

excellent
And almost too intense! But I've weathered that storm and am ready for the next one. Yes, I bought book 5 of the series. If you like space military action this is a series you might enjoy.

Decent
Despite the semi-illiterate use of βtry-andβ rather than βtry-toβ ubiquitously (and other issues an editor would have fixed), this is a work of titillating pulp fiction.

It's Worst When You're Least Expecting It
This books starts a new sub-series in Stewart's "Duchy of Terra"setting, some 15 years after the events in the previous series. Now part of the A!Tol empire long enough that young humans tend tosay "we", Earth is a respected contributor, and the Duchy fleet issecond only to the Imperial fleets. New colonies of humans (largely:Any Imperial citizen who wishes to settle can, of course) are beingstarted and things are going well.Until suddenly they aren't, and attacks done at Core Power levelsare made on the new colonies. Is it the Kanzi? Relations with theslaver power known to be holding many humans in that state havenever been good, and the ships, while more powerful than any knownseem to have Kanzi aesthetics. But the Kanzi theocracy claims toknow nothing about it, and now *their* fringe colonies are beinghit. Even the Mesharom, the eldest Core Power have themselves beenhit, a truly terrifying development. Will the Empire and Theocracyhave to make common cause? Will the Empire become a Core Power?Thrown into the middle of all this is Morgan Casimir, a young Duchyfleet officer, and daughter of the Duchess.I thought this was an entertaining entry in Stewart's milsf setting. The cast are mainly types, but fairly well written types. The original cast is not wholly absent, but largely offscreen whileevents in space unfold. The Mesharom interactions were an interestingaddition, and I wonder if that ancient race might come out of its shelljust a little bit.

Only one complaint
Another great book in the series, keeping the action rolling. My only complaint is that a few pivotal battles at the end seemed very rushed. One was no more than pages of build up and then a few paragraphs to say which side won and there were some losses. Not sure if the author ran out of steam. Still excited to start the next book.

Seamless Continuation of an Amazing Series
Darkness Beyond picks up from the end of 'Terra and Imperium' some twenty plus years later. What is really great is that this new series, 'Light of Terra', is as good as the previous series. I've been waiting on the next book after 'Terra and Imperium' for over a year as I never felt that the series could end with only three books. So this book is a welcome surprise. Morgan was last seen as a very young girl, the step-daughter of the Duchess of Terra, Annette Bond. Now a grown woman and senior officer serving as a Watch Officer on one of the Duchy's most modern warship, Bellerophon, Morgan does her part in the defense of the Imperium. Highly recommend this book, and am most certainly looking forward to the next one. Good stuff!!

New series, hurrah!
Darkness Beyond is the first book in the new Duchy of Terra series. The first series was good quality space opera and this second series continues apace and develops the story and characters further. I am a big Glynn Stewart fan and as always for me there was a good balance between the action and the level of description which keeps you invested in the story. This is a good story, definitely worth a read. Iβm looking forward to the next book.Note: I received a free electronic copy in exchange for an unbiased review (but liked it enough to buy a copy anyway)

Great continuation of this world scene
I did receive a free copy of this book prior to release, but I enjoyed it enough to buy the book once it was out. I find this author's books to be well developed and feature good characters with a decent pacing. I found this book to be a good continuation of the existing series despite it being a new series and would happily recommend this to anyone else.I'd suggest any of this authors books for anyone who likes sci-fi with a touch of space opera.

This book was great.
Once I started redaing this book I was unable to put it down. It was certainly good value for money. The story has lots of twists and turns which enhance rather than detract from the story. As always with this author you can get lost in the sheer number of space vessels in the story. Ignoring that the action is great and the storyline is strong from start to finish.

Inventive
Another page turner. A start of a new plotline in the established duchy of terra universe. New characters and some old faces in the Background. Picking up a small thread left dangling in the previous book but 15 years on.There are plenty of detailed battles, and well thought out tactics. I cannot wait for the sequel
