How comprehensiveness can turn into a turn-off
First off: it's a beautiful, well-documented, voluminous work of high standard on the life and work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, by someone who obviously is very knowledgeable about the subject matter. However, it's not what I expected, for the reason that one could summarize as 'not being able to see the forest because of the trees'. Maybe it's because I'm an Architect and not an Art historian, and really like to see a lot of pictures of his work, that well into the book, you're realizing it's not going to change; it's 'TMI' (too much information). As a reference book in your library; very valuable. As a book that will show the scope and documentation relative to his work; it doesn't live up to the voluminous and beautiful appearance of the edition. While reading I keep getting confused with the timelines, the parties, etc. as the author keeps referring back and forth without giving the reader a clear outline of the works in his life, through the years of it. Do I appreciate seeing the artistic environment and works of art produced by it, thru which C.R. Mackintosh came to fame ? Certainly ! But I'll look for another book on C.R. Mackintosh, focusing on his work. 4 Stars for a good work, but not all it could have been, or what you would expect.

A beautifully produced book on a great architect
Charles Rennie Mackintosh - father of the Glasgow School of Design - was a seminal influence on both the Bauhaus style and Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture. This book is a major tour de force - in terms of topic, design, writing and printing (in Italy) - a beautiful book in all ways and a fitting testimony to one of the world's greatest, and often unappreciated, architects. Would that Taschen had their books designed and printed by the team that did this book - a booklover's book - that will never be bettered by any electronic version. Now we need a book of the same quality on the Hungarian art nouveau movement that led to the breathtaking Gresham Palace Building (now Four Seasons) in Budapest.

Excellent volume
Full of detail about his origins as an artist that I don't find in other books. Also contains some photos that I haven't seen in other books on CRM. This book fills the need for information on the artist. But there is still a need for better photos! Every time I see a new photo I think how I've never seen it like that before. I want to see his work well lit and from all angles and distances.
