DECISION AT SUNDOWN BLURAY from INDICATOR/POWERHOUSE released July 2020
A lot of reviewers and Scott fans feel this isn't one of the best of the collaberations between Scott/Brown/Boetticher. I agree, but it is a true sturdy compact western with classic ingedients throughout the plot (though there are no Indians!). Here Scott is a vengefull, stubborn and not very nice (!) man seeking the man who destroyed his life and wife. This bad guy is played by by John Carroll - a bad guy, but with a twist! The ladies are well represnted by Karen Steele and Valerie French (why didn't she have a better career - beautiful and talented - the vagaries of Hollywood.) Able support from the always reliable Noah Beery and an unbilled appearence from Bob Steele. The BLURAY quality is excellent, but so is my DVD from Warner Archive. Good 16.9 ratio, sound and subtitles (the reason I bought it.) A good price and well worth getting.

Scott Goes Against Type, and it Ain't Half Bad.
Budd Boetticher was not only a very talented director who performed small miracles with small budgets, but he was also very honest with himself. When once interviewed about films in his famous ‘Ranown cycle’ where he collaborated with producer Harry Joe Brown, actor Randolph Scott and writer Burt Kennedy, he dismissed “Decision at Sundown" together with “Buchanan Rides Alone”, as inferior to others in the series. True that it is not as good as “The Tall T”, “Comanche Station” and especially “Ride Lonesome”, but it is still a mighty good western. The difference as Boetticher pointed out was that the first two were written by Charles Lang and not his preferred writer Burt Kennedy, with whom he had a fruitful and happy relationship. In these films Scott is not quite the same silent assured ‘man of the west’. He is suddenly vulnerable and emotionally unstable. Not the usual Scott template, which makes for an interesting contrast. In this one Scott is the man who comes to town on a mission of vengeance. The town is in thrall to the man he is hunting played by John Carroll. Changes are afoot!Plenty to admire here! There are some strong lines. The bartender says to the town doctor “Doc, if you’d been tending bars as long as me you wouldn’t expect so much of the human race”. He should know! Then we have a villain who goes against type in admitting that he is afraid. Boetticher always made his villains that little more interesting! The cast is a bit more lightweight than usual given Boetticher’s ability to find stars, but Noah Beery jnr, is dependable as ever as Scott’s sidekick, Andrew Duggan is good as a corrupt sheriff, and Ranown regular Karen Steele also provides good support. John Carroll, looking and sounding for all the world like a poor mans Clark Gable is perhaps one of Boetticher’s weaker villains, and how we miss the gorgeous Alabama Hills outdoor locations from some of the other films. Never mind, there is still plenty here to keep the fan happy!

Ahead of its Time Moral Compromise
Not one of the classics of the Boetticher canon. In fact, strangely fatalistic piece with Randy beginning in the 'normal' way of a man with certainty of purpose who gets seriously compromised by others' knowledge of his past who ends up walking away in a most unlikely fashion. It's possibly something to do with McCarthyism but whatever it is it eschews the normal plot-arc you'd expect and ends up a rather confused mess of the form. Probably very interesting because of that and worthy of some kind of study, but oddly muted and constrained by all the decisions to enact a different kind of western in which the baddie is clearly a baddie but not bad enough to 'get what's coming'. Strange.

Randolph Scott Western
After a long time without either high quality blu-ray DVD copies of or specific Randolph Scott westerns, finally, a number of the Budd Boetticher directed westerns are being released. Some consider these westerns to be "B" grade movies. I do not agree but find Randolph Scott's under stated acting style coupled with sparse dialog to be excellent. This particular story of delayed vengeance in a town controlled by the very person Scott's character wants to exact that vengeance against, is full of those elements. The western action is set entirely in the town. But is the truth of the vengeance story entirely true? Watch and find out.
