Surprising Sharks: Read and Wonder

This is a fun classroom read for kindergarten. I got a book study unit on Teachers Pay Teachers. My students loved this book. We even got out a tape measure to demonstrate the difference in the sizes of the sharks. Fun read aloud.

I used this book with second graders as a writing mentor text for informational writing. They loved it! It was great to see them infuse humor in their nonfiction writing and to see how this book helped them to learn how to “hook” their readers. Plus the fact as vey interesting!

We teach shark week at our preschool center... I just reordered this book because our original copy fell apart from years of overuse... it teaches the children about sharks without the terrifying pictures you see I most of the other child oriented books... For years the children in my care have remembered more about the different types of sharks, their varying diets, shark anatomy, and human impact on them after reading this particular book... The illustrations are well done... My loves this book so much, he drew his own version and stapled the pages together! The book also uses humor which helps to maintain their attention...

Perfect picture book for teaching nonfiction text features. We use this book in 2nd grade. Illustrations and information is presented in an interesting and age appropriate way.

This is a great read. I bought it for use in my kindergarten class. It is an easy read for young children to listen to and follow the amazing shark facts. There are various sharks in the book too. My class really enjoyed it.

Very awesome and informative shark book. Very long and detailed, not a quick story read, but has some good cartoon shark pictures to help learn some different kinds of sharks focusing on different areas of the book each time

great children's book

I bought this for my four year old who is interested in sharks but a little afraid. This book really highlights that sharks are KILLERS (literally in bold uppercase letters 😬) and reminds the reader that sharks do kill people (6 each year) 😬😬. For older readers this is balanced out by an overall message that sharks are an important part of the ocean ecosystem in their role as a predator and that they are more afraid of people than we are of them. But this message was lost on my four year old and I had to skip lots and lots of the text to get through it.
