Exactly as described. For anyone buying this expecting to cut it down to a medium height pedestal, make sure you cut from the top. The bottom is slightly tapered to fit snugly in the receiver. If you don't believe me, try inserting the post upside down.I purchased to cut down to 21" and had no issues. You can easily tap out the plastic end cap and re-install as the new height. I haven't drilled holes for the lock since I never lock my bow seat anyway, but the aluminum drills as easily as it cuts. For the price, this has been a better option than replacing everything to go to an adjustable seat.

I bought two of these 28" posts in order to raise the height of two of my fixed height boat seats. Since their 15" pedestal option was too short I bought the 28" pedestals with the idea of cutting them down to 18" each and thus adding 5" of height to each seat (I previously had the 13" pedestals). (note: I suggest Springfield sell some pedestals in the 18" length--they currently only offer 15" and 28")The great problem I faced when cutting the aluminum posts was that the heat from the cutting changed/expanded the diameter of the post and it no longer fit in the pedestal base (yes, I filed it carefully). It fit before I cut it but not afterwards, so there was a definite change in the metal's size. I had to cut a slit in the pedestal bottom (where it was cut) so that I could hammer it into the pedestal base. Not a perfect solution but the only one left to me given the problem. So, be aware if you are planning to cut these pedestals to size, this is a problem you will face.Of course, you can switch to adjustable height pedestals to avoid this problem; but the cost is four to five times greater.

I needed a taller seat post, was looking for 19inch to clear items on my boat. This fit the bill. Soft aluminum so easy to cut with with my sawzaw or a hacksaw. Cut from the top, not the bottom, they are tapered and will not fit in the seat mount if you cut from the bottom. When you cut from the top, you will take off the seat stops, so you will only be able to use the tension adjust knob to put seat where you want. A little pricy but no other option. Well made, I ordered 2 of them.

Didn’t even need to cut it but if you do make sure you do as others have said and cut from the top.
